Rock Creek Valley Historical Society of Westmoreland, Kansas is again sponsoring a "Virtual" walk to Oregon, in honor of those pioneers who passed this way in search of a dream. We are inspired to do so by the numerous modern-day 'Trail Buffs' who frequently pass through here, following the trail by various means--by car or van, in RV's, on bicycles or motorcycles, and some even walking the entire distance from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon or to California.
Join us for the official start of the 2014 Oregon Trail-A-Thon for PIONEER DAY: A CELEBRATION OF THE OREGON TRAIL on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We'll walk as many miles as we can on May 31 on the "Little Dog Lost" walking trail from the Museum to the Oregon Trail Park and back; a distance of 2 miles. In addition there will be activities throughout the day at the Museum and the Oregon Trail Park.
For those who want to get a head start on the trail, registration for walkers begins at the Kansas Sampler Festival on May 3-4 in Wamego at the Westmoreland exhibit. The Trail-A-Thon will continue throughout the summer as "Pioneers" continue walking to reach the goal of 2,000 miles.
Our goal is two-fold -- walk the entire length of the Oregon Trail (2,000 miles) and raise $2,000 in donations for the Rock Creek Valley Historical Society to help maintain the "Little Dog Lost Walking Trail", other museum exhibits, and keep museum admission free. We need active walkers and active donors to meet our goal.
We will continue to update this website over the next several weeks. In the meantime, mark your calendars to join us May 31 to begin our adventure at Pioneer Day: A Celebration of the Oregon Trail.
